Could be disagreement on strategy, or personal issue with him and CEO / board / other?  Or maybe they just didn't think he was effective.  Still, if it were the above you'd think they'd transition him out quietly...

Whenever there's a high level shuffle without any apparent explanation or cause, I think it comes down to one of two things - either there was a big clash of egos with someone who has a lot of influence at the company, or there's some sort of scandal going on, e.g. sexual harassment or a clear incident of discrimination the board knows it can't rebuke.
