Remote to in person

Question

I was hired as a remote employee, but now my employer is asking me to be in the office. It's not that I am avoiding the office. It's just I agree with the job because I wanted to work remotely. What should I do?

Most people re-enter the job market and take a new position if they can. The ones that can’t end up back in the office.

If your circumstances make it unfeasible or you simply don't want to do it, you might just want to continue working from home until they do something about it and take the severance package. Start looking for another job that is doable hybrid/in-person or look for something fully remote in the meantime. I can't say for certain so don't take my word on the following, but the job market seems like many employers are aware that talent is leaving where they are because of return to office in the face of remote work promises, and even moreso with recent big tech layoffs., so the opportunities are out  there.

If you're in the US, you probably don't have much legal recourse to fight it, so I think your only options are to go in like they want, try to convince them to give you an exception, or quit.
