So what does an ML engineering job looks like?

The field is very new, so everyone is just a poser at this point. Everyone thinks that their way is correct and everyone else's is wrong.

Hiring managers for ML jobs are some of the rudest people I have spoken to within my company due to their superiority complex.

It is just a huge mess overall.

ML has a lot of intersection with data engineering like ETL, pipelines, etc.  The day to day could involve. a combo of coding, modeling, and data infrastructure work.

Oftentimes this is a Python engineer with a lot of experience in common ML frameworks (scikit-learn, pytorch, tensorflow, etc). They'd be expected to have pretty deep knowledge of learning algorithm implementations - for example, taking a research paper on an interesting  NN architecture and making it real. They generally are not expected to understand the WHYs behind the algorithms they use or research new ones, though they may work closely with researchers depending on the organizational structure.
