I was being interviewed by two engineering managers and eventually we started talking about life and I just remember it being so fun. I told them I want to build a somewhat of a curated e-commerce site and one of the managers told me how he's always too lazy to execute his ideas. It was really fun.

Believe it or not… Amazon. Much less focused on brain teasers and more on practical problems along with soft skills

All my great interview experiences have been at smaller startups where I had real conversations and talked more about product than did algorithms. They were genuinely enjoyable and even for the ones I didn't pass the interviews at, I walked away thinking about something new and didn't feel crappy.

I've been through a few interview processes and conducted lots of interviews myself. There are good bits and bad bits to every process, here are some things that make a process stand out:

* Feedback velocity - the quicker you can provide feedback on the outcome of the interview the better. This makes candidates feel valued and that you are taking them and the time they spend on this process seriously. It's just good manners.

* Being transparent - the more opaque the process is, the more the candidate thinks that the employers is 'out to trick them', which in almost every case is wrong. Be clear with candidates about what each interview is going to entail, this will reduce stress and give parties a better change of getting the right signals. I was in a process recently, and the company gave me the list of behavioural ("tell me about a time when...") questions ahead of time - it was a great conversation.

* Focus on real-world situations - focus the technical aspects of the interview process on actual activities that the candidate would likely be completing. This could be programming interviews where you have a set failing test cases, or actually designing the service you run / operate. This will be different for every company, but will give you the best understanding of how the candidate would operate at your company.

I interviewed at a HomeChef which was a really great interview process. They have you work on a problem they actually ran into recently (a real ticket) which was go refreshing.

Their recruiter was terrible, so the overall candidate experience was not great, but the interview portions were really thoughtful and great.
