So far, I have never used/seen a cover letter while interviewing. How important are they?Can you share a good sample for software engineering position?

Instead of a cover letter, write a nice concise and personalized email to the HM. Plus points for including a product demo for a suggestion you want to see on the existing product. Actions > words

Not important these days. If you’re applying to a startup or smaller company including a short personal note in an email is a good gesture and strong signal but aside from that not necessary.

I experimented with adding a cover letter(sort of listing my achievements in 2 para) and got great success with recruiters compared to without a cover letter.

Not very important to be honest. Some companies will force you to upload or type one, though.One useful use case would be if you’re switching industries, but even I’m not even sure people on the other side will read.
